What is De Quervain’s Syndrome?
De Quervain’s Syndrome occurs when the tendons that provide motion and action to the thumb become inflamed. These fluid-filled tendons that are housed within a tendon sheath are called synovium. When the synovium becomes inflamed, this is called tenosynovitis. The muscles in this area are on the radius (thumb side) of the forearm, right above the wrist, and cross over the wrist and into the thumb.
What are the Symptoms of De Quervain's Syndrome?
De Quervain's Syndrome can result in swelling in this area, and pain in the thumb and wrist with certain wrist motions, like picking things up or squeezing/pinching objects. If there is enough inflammation, there will be an audible squeaking noise as the synovial sheaths glide against each other.
Chiropractic Treatment Can Help
Chiropractic treatment can help with De Quervain's Syndrome symptoms. A chiropractor will perform soft tissue and bony palpation to assess the range of motion within the thumb and wrist. Once a baseline is established, your chiropractor will walk you through different stretches and exercises. He could even perform small adjustments to the area. As strength is gained and symptoms improve, your treatment will be adjusted to accommodate.
