What is Sciatica?
Sciatica is a term used to describe radiculopathy or even radicular pain due to nerve compression at the level of the spine that supplies the sciatic nerve or direct compression of the sciatic nerve. Sciatic nerve pain can be confused with gluteal or hamstring-related pain as the associated pain may follow the same route the sciatic nerve travels. The hallmark symptom of sciatica is radiating pain that travels from the lower back or buttocks down one leg, typically following a specific path. The pain may vary in intensity and is often described as sharp, shooting, or burning. There may be numbness present as well into the legs or feet.
What Causes Sciatica?
Sciatica can occur from a disc bulge or herniation causing it to press on a nerve root or it can occur from osteophyte (calcium/bony) growth on the vertebrae where the nerve root exits the spine. These can often be confused with Piriformis Syndrome where the sciatic nerve gets compressed in the gluteal region by the piriformis if the piriformis muscle is tight or if the nerve pierces through the piriformis muscle itself.
How is Sciatica Treated?
There are a number of non-invasive, drug-free chiropractic and physical therapy treatments for sciatica. Depending on your personal history and a thorough exam, your chiropractor or physical therapist may perform a manual adjustment of your lower spine, mobilization, manual therapy, IASTM (instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization), electronic stimulation, shockwave therapy, or dry needling.
