Chiropractor and Physical Therapist for Osgood-Schlatter's Treatment in Carrollton, TX

Osgood-Schlatter disease is a common cause of knee pain in growing adolescents, especially those who are active in sports.

What is it?

Osgood-Schlatter is typically an overuse injury that affects the growth plate at the tibial tuberosity—the bony bump just below the kneecap where the patellar tendon attaches into the tibia. During growth spurts, this area is softer and more vulnerable to stress and when adolescents who are growing load the knee too much can create pain in this area. This is commonly referred to as apophysitis as well.

  • Most common in kids ages 10–15 years

  • Often occurs in those who play sports with running, jumping, or quick direction changes (soccer, basketball, volleyball, track)

What causes it

Repeated pulling of the patellar tendon during activity causes irritation and inflammation of the tibial tuberosity where the patellar tendon attaches. Over time, the body tries to heal by laying down extra bone, which can create a noticeable bump in some cases.

What are common symptoms?

  • Pain just below the kneecap (at the tibial tuberosity)

  • Swelling or tenderness at the bump

  • Pain increases with activity and improves with rest

  • Tight quadriceps or hamstrings are often involved

How can physical therapy or chiropractic care help?

1. Improve Lower-Extremity Joint Mechanics

Chiropractic adjustments can address dysfunction in:

  • The ankle (especially dorsiflexion restriction)

  • The knee joint

  • The hip and pelvis

  • The lumbar spine

Improving joint mobility reduces abnormal stress on the patellar tendon and tibial tuberosity.

2. Soft Tissue Therapy

Chiropractors can apply:

  • Myofascial release

  • Instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM)

  • Dry Needling

  • Shockwave Therapy

These techniques help reduce tension in the quadriceps, IT band, hip flexors, and hamstrings, all of which commonly contribute to excessive traction on the tibial tuberosity.

3. Movement Pattern Correction

Chiropractors often assess:

  • Gait

  • Squat mechanics

  • Landing mechanics

Correcting dysfunctional patterns reduces repetitive strain on the knee during sports.

4. Targeted Strengthening

Physical therapy focuses on strengthening muscles that reduce load on the knee, especially:

  • Quadriceps (pain-free progression)

  • Gluteus medius and maximus

  • Hamstrings

  • Core stabilizers

Better strength = less traction on the growth plate.

5. Flexibility and Mobility Work

PTs guide safe and effective stretching programs for:

  • Quadriceps

  • Hamstrings

  • Hip flexors

  • Calves

This reduces tension transmitted through the patellar tendon.

6. Activity Modification & Load Management

PTs help determine:

  • What activities are safe

  • How to modify sports participation

  • When and how to return to sport

  • How to reduce flare-ups
