Ankle Pain

The ankle is a complex joint that allows for various movements, including flexion, extension, inversion, and eversion. Ankle pain can be caused by a variety of factors, including injuries, inflammation, overuse, or underlying medical conditions.

Common Causes of Ankle Pain Include:

  1. Sprains and Strains: Ligaments and tendons in the ankle can be stretched or torn, often due to a sudden twist or turn.

  2. Fractures: A break in one or more of the bones in the ankle, usually resulting from a traumatic injury.

  3. Arthritis: Inflammation of the ankle joint, which can be caused by different types of arthritis, such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.

  4. Tendonitis: Inflammation of the tendons surrounding the ankle joint.

  5. Overuse or Repetitive Stress: Continuous strain on the ankle, such as in activities like running, can lead to pain and discomfort.

  6. Gout: A type of arthritis caused by the buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints, including the ankle (more common in the big toe though.)

  7. Infections: Infections can sometimes affect the ankle joint, leading to pain and swelling.

  8. Nerve Compression: Pressure on nerves around the ankle can result in pain and discomfort.

  9. Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD): Reduced blood flow to the lower extremities can cause pain in the ankles.

How Can Chiropractic Care Help Ankle Pain?

Chiropractic care can be helpful with recovery from ankle pain. The initial goals are to reduce inflammation. This can be done with techniques such as dry needling, shockwave therapy, instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization techniques, or other techniques.

Manipulation and joint mobilization around the foot and ankle can help to improve biomechanics of the foot/arch and the ankle and also reduce pain as well. Strengthening exercises of the foot and ankle can help reduce symptoms and make the foot and ankle stronger.
