What is Achilles Tendonitis?

Achilles tendonitis, also spelled Achilles tendinitis, is a condition characterized by inflammation of the Achilles tendon. The Achilles tendon is a strong, fibrous band of tissue that connects the calf muscles to the heel bone (calcaneus). It is essential for activities like walking, running, and jumping.

Achilles tendonitis often occurs as a result of overuse or repetitive strain on the Achilles tendon. This can happen due to activities that involve running, jumping, or sudden increases in intensity or duration of exercise. Other factors that may contribute to the development of Achilles tendonitis include poor footwear, tight calf muscles, and biomechanical issues.

How can Chiropractic care help Achilles Tendonitis?

Chiropractic care can be helpful with recovery from Achilles Tendonitis. Initial goals are to reduce inflammation of the Achilles tendon and increase blood circulation to the area to assist in recovery. This can be done with techniques such as dry needling, shockwave therapy, instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization techniques or cross-friction massage techniques. Addressing the soft tissues of the calf and the arch of the foot is important as well.

Manipulation and joint mobilization around the foot and ankle can help to improve the biomechanics of the foot/arch and the ankle. Strengthening exercises of the calf and Achilles along with the arch/foot and pelvic regions also help to improve those symptoms.
